A lenticular filter uses a stack of circular depth filter cells inside a housing. To specify one, describe the liquid at the inlet, set the quality target for the outlet and work out the time available for the batch. The inlet and outlet data narrow the choice of media. The transfer window helps you size the system. Cytiva depth filter module overview

If you already run a sheet filter or another lenticular system, bring its operating data to the comparison. A record of batch volume, differential pressure and quality at the end of a run is more useful for sizing than a clean-water flow figure.

Key takeaways

  • Choose a media grade against an outlet specification and a representative feed sample.

  • Size the filter for both the flow you need and the volume it must process before a changeout.

  • Confirm the adapter, stack height and seal with the housing drawing.

  • Compare costs per unit of accepted filtrate, including product left in the system.

How a lenticular filter works

In a common stacked-disc design, each cell contains depth media and a drainage layer. Liquid passes through the media, and the drainage layer routes filtrate into a central core. The cells stack around that core and connect to the housing outlet through an adapter. Seals at that interface keep the feed and filtrate paths separate. Follow the flow direction shown on the drawing for the actual assembly. Cytiva module construction and adapters

The media can capture particles at its surface and within its thickness. Adsorption can also contribute, depending on the formulation and the liquid. A lenticular module and a flat sheet can use related depth media, which makes the physical format a separate choice from the retention grade. Depth media and module construction

Set the outlet requirement before comparing grades. For a clarification stage, that might be turbidity at a specified temperature. A prefilter may instead need to keep the pressure rise of the next stage within the plant's operating window. When the concern is a dissolved color or odor compound, define the target and include recovery of desirable components in the trial.

Process objective

Candidate to evaluate

Trial acceptance criteria

Remove suspended solids or visible haze

Clarification grade selected for the feed load

Outlet clarity through the batch and volume processed before the agreed endpoint

Protect a downstream fine filter

Depth prefilter selected with the downstream stage in mind

Feed and outlet measurements, plus pressure trend on the downstream filter

Work with a composition-sensitive liquid

Media candidates screened for product compatibility and recovery

Product yield and any composition, sensory or extractables checks required by the process

Reduce a specified color or odor

A media grade formulated for adsorption, if compatible

Target reduction and retention of the product characteristics you want to keep

A nominal micron rating is useful for shortlisting media. Request the supplier's test method and retention basis when comparing ratings from different product families. For a microbial release requirement, evaluate the qualified final control step against the organisms and conditions specified by the process. Nominal depth media and final filtration guidance

LOONGFiltration lists composite media in its DKF-S family, pure-cellulose media in DKF-M and activated-carbon media in DKF-C. The family name helps narrow the discussion. The grade, effective area and operating limits belong on the quote for the exact item. Composite depth modules · Pure-cellulose modules · Lenticular product range

Match the module to the housing

Compare the module and vessel drawings before ordering a replacement. Match the outside diameter, installed height, adapter type and seal dimensions. Check the center post or retaining arrangement and how much clearance the operator needs to lift the wet module. Two modules in the same nominal size class can still need different adapters. Check the interface on the drawing. Examples of flat gasket and O-ring adapters

Specify the vessel pressure and temperature ratings separately from the allowable pressure drop across the media. Ask for limits for filtration and any planned cleaning cycle. Include the seal material, product-contact material, connection details and drain arrangement in the review. If you are buying a complete system, confirm which pump, gauges and valves the quotation includes. LOONGFiltration lenticular housing range

Size the filter from a process trial

Use a representative sample at the intended process temperature. Set the trial flux, which is volumetric flow divided by effective media area, and record the differential pressure as the processed volume increases. Agree on the endpoint before starting. It can be a pressure limit or a change in filtrate quality, whichever the process reaches first. Depth filtration pilot and scale-up guidance

Calculate the area two ways. Divide the required flow by the demonstrated flux to estimate the area needed to meet the transfer window. Divide the batch feed volume by the trial capacity per unit area to estimate the area needed to finish the batch. Start with the larger area. Round up to a module arrangement the housing accepts, then check whether it can handle variation in the feed.

Record what happened near the end of the trial. A grade that meets clarity at startup but reaches the pressure limit early may need more area or a change in upstream solids removal. Those two options have different equipment and operating costs.

Compare operating cost and changeover

Use the same output quality and batch size for each quote. Count the modules consumed, the time to prepare and change them, rinse and cleaning use, and the value of unrecovered product. Divide the cost by the volume of filtrate that meets the specification. Use the vessel's fill volume to plan the transfer, then measure the product you lose after draining and recovery.

Treat hardware cleaning and media regeneration as separate line items. LOONGFiltration lists DKF-B as a backflushable family. Confirm the specific module and vessel arrangement, allowable reverse pressure and approved rinse procedure before including repeat use in the cost comparison. Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse the media grade from my sheet filter?

Some manufacturers supply related media in both formats. Give the supplier the exact sheet grade and its operating history. Confirm the proposed module grade and trial it on your liquid before transferring the specification. Sheet and module media formats

How many modules will I need?

Estimate the area from trial flux and capacity, then divide by the effective area of the quoted module. Round up to an arrangement the housing supports. Confirm the full assembly against the production flow and batch window.

How do I know when a module needs changing?

Set the endpoint for the actual duty. An agreed pressure drop, a fall in flow or a missed outlet criterion can end a run. Track which condition occurs first so that the next quote addresses the constraint you actually see.

Can I use an existing housing?

Compare the vessel drawing with the module drawing and confirm the seal and retaining arrangement. Once the drawings confirm the fit, trial the proposed grade on your liquid.
