The Pain Points of Traditional Decolorization

In the production of high-purity lactose and other refined food or pharmaceutical ingredients, engineers frequently face the limitations of traditional decolorization methods. The use of loose powdered activated carbon often results in incomplete pigment removal and poses a severe risk of secondary contamination due to carbon shedding. This not only compromises the final purity and appearance of the product but also adds cumbersome filtration steps, increases cleaning costs, and elevates the risk of batch rejection.

LOONG Filtration Activated Carbon Depth Lenticular Filter

To address these critical purification challenges, we are sharing a successful decolorization case study from one of our lactose manufacturing clients. Designed to serve as the "new engine" for process upgrades, the LOONG Filtration Activated Carbon Depth Lenticular Filter perfectly combines exceptional adsorption capacity with physical interception, providing an ideal, dust-free solution to entirely replace traditional powdered carbon processes.

Experimental Process

  • Raw Liquid Preparation: 2kg of lactose was added to 3L of purified water and stirred in an 80°C water bath until completely dissolved. The resulting raw solution was a distinct, transparent yellow liquid requiring pigment and impurity removal.

  • Precision Pre-Filtration: A 0.22µm PP (Polypropylene) pleated filter cartridge was utilized as the primary stage to effectively remove suspended impurities and large particulate matter from the raw liquid.

  • Core Decolorization Stage: The LOONG Filtration Activated Carbon Depth Lenticular Filter was employed for secondary filtration. The entire process was strictly maintained at a constant temperature of 80°C to prevent lactose crystallization at low temperatures, fully utilizing the filter's high-temperature stability.

Experimental Results & Key Value

The performance of the Activated Carbon Depth Lenticular Filter in this case study highlights the tangible commercial and operational values we deliver:
  • Exceptional Decolorization: Following the treatment, the initially yellow transparent lactose solution was successfully transformed into a clear, white/colorless liquid, demonstrating remarkable pigment removal efficiency and safeguarding the product's appearance.

Comparison of the solution before and after filtration

  • Zero Carbon Shedding & Pure Results: Unlike traditional adsorption methods, our advanced immobilized composite structure eliminates the need for adding powdered activated carbon. This completely avoids the secondary contamination caused by carbon powder leakage, guaranteeing the absolute purity of the lactose.

  • Streamlined Operations & Cost Reduction: By eliminating loose carbon, the process bypasses the tedious subsequent steps of carbon trapping and equipment cleaning, vastly simplifying the operational workflow and reducing overall operational costs.
